A newsletter is the only email format where the reader has agreed to a recurring relationship, and the only one judged on consistency rather than on any single send. That changes the design priorities: recognisability and scannability matter more than novelty, and the structure has to survive being seen fifty times.

A fixed shape

The most valuable thing a newsletter design provides is a predictable frame. A reader who has seen four issues should know where the main piece sits, where the short items are, and where the thing they always skip to lives.

That argues for deciding a structure and holding it: a lead item, a set of shorter ones in a consistent shape, and a recurring closing section. Variety belongs in the content, not in the layout.

Typography does most of the work

Newsletters are text-led, which makes type the primary design tool:

• Two sizes carrying the hierarchy, with weight handling the rest.
• 50–70 characters per line. Full-width text at 600px with small type is genuinely tiring to read.
• Real space between sections — more than feels necessary. Vertical rhythm is what turns a wall into a set of items.
• Left aligned. Centred body text is slower to read and newsletters are long enough for that to matter.

Make it skimmable

Most readers scan first and read second. A newsletter should work for both:

• Headings that state the point rather than tease it.
• A one-line summary under each heading, so the skimmer gets the substance.
• Links that describe their destination instead of saying "read more" five times.
• An optional contents list at the top, once the issue runs past four or five items.

The recurring sections are the habit

The parts readers come back for are usually the small recurring ones — a single recommendation, a short answer to a reader question, one link worth clicking. They are cheap to produce and they are what makes an issue feel like part of a series rather than a broadcast.

Design them as distinct blocks so they are recognisable at a glance.
